Ḥesed → μάθετε

Record
Hosea 6:6 prints כִּי חֶסֶד חָפַצְתִּי וְלֹא־זָבַח / וְדַעַת אֱלֹהִים מֵעֹלוֹת. God desires ḥesed, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. KJV and JPS 1917 print “mercy” here and “goodness” for the same noun in Hosea 6:4. Two halves. Matthew 9:13 quotes only the first.
Micah 6:8 prints עֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט וְאַהֲבַת חֶסֶד וְהַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת עִם־אֱלֹהֶיךָ. Same noun. Different construction. There God desires ḥesed. Here the human is told to love it, inside a triad: do justice, love ḥesed, walk carefully with God. KJV and JPS print “love mercy.” ASV prints “love kindness.” Brenton prints “love mercy” and “be ready to walk,” not “humbly.”
Matthew 9:9–13, Textus Receptus, four forms in five verses:
| Form | Verse | Root |
|---|---|---|
| Ματθαῖον | 9 | The name. Tau then theta (τθ). Not Greek. |
| μαθηταῖς | 10 and 11 | μανθάνω. The learners already in the room. |
| διδάσκαλος | 11 | διδάσκω. Teacher. A different verb. |
| μάθετε | 13 | μανθάνω. Aorist imperative. Aimed at the Pharisees. |
δέ is but/and, not “therefore.” TR, the 1904 Patriarchal text, and the Text-Critical Greek NT print ἔλεον and εἰς μετάνοιαν. A shorter critical line omits εἰς μετάνοιαν. Μαθθαῖον (θθ) is the other spelling of the name. It was not in that pull. No verse prints “Levi, who is also called Matthew.”
ḥesed and ἔλεος are not cognates. Ματθαῖος and μάθετε are not one root. talāsh, manthanō, and intellegere are not one root.
Clocks on the record: Hosea and Micah sit on the Tanakh prophetic clock. 929 can hold them. It cannot hold Matthew. The booth-to-table scene is the gospel quotation clock. The τθ / θθ pair is the name-spelling clock. 21 September is the Western feast of Matthew, a day-number beside a Houston birth, not this spelling.
House reading
The search does not stop at the quotation. Matthew prints the command in the same breath as the meal: go and learn what this means. The learners are already at the table. The people questioning the meal are the ones told to become learners.
Talāsh is the posture. I am still looking. Māthete is the act he puts on the Pharisees. Intellegentia is the older Latin name for picking out what is. Three words, three languages, one neighborhood. I hear them together. I do not glue the roots.
The तलाश ends at the table of mercy. That is the house reading of Matthew 9:13, not a second verse hiding in Hosea.
