סֶלַע

Thesis

סֶלַע is not צֹר. Ezekiel 26:14 puts the other rock-word on a city whose name is already a rock.

The record

The noun is סֶלַע (selaʿ), a crag, a cliff. Brown-Driver-Briggs: synonym of צוּר, not the same lemma. Ezekiel uses it only in 26:4 and 26:14, for a razed city. Document clock.

KJV Ezekiel 26:14 prints "the top of a rock" for לִצְחִיחַ סֶלַע. LBLA prints "una roca desnuda." The English and the Spanish both say rock. Neither prints the Hebrew word. API.Bible · non-commercial. KJV public domain except the UK print right. LBLA © 1986, 1995, 1997 The Lockman Foundation.

The name of the city in that chapter is צֹר, Tyre. Abarim records צוּר as the noun "rock," a different root from סֶלַע. Same field. Not the same word.

A proper name uses the same letters. KJV 2 Kings 14:7: Amaziah "took Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day." LBLA: "tomó a Sela en batalla, y la llamó Jocteel." That Sela is a place in Edom. The old identification with Petra is disputed. BDB calls the site dubious and notes that the old Petra identification has been denied. The Septuagint prints πέτρα. Greek petra is a neighbor. It is not a proof that the Edomite Sela is the Nabataean city. Document clock.

KJV 2 Samuel 22:2: "The LORD is my rock." The Hebrew there is סַלְעִי. The KJV does not show the word.

The split

One line: do not read Ezekiel's סֶלַע as the name Tyre, and do not read the Edomite Sela as Petra, and do not read either as the G in RobThuGod. Three rocks. Three clocks.

What the record does carry: the oracle refuses the city's own rock-word. It sets סֶלַע on צֹר, then says לֹא תִבָּנֶה עוֹד.

The house reading

The sentence renames her with the other rock. Her name stays a rock that can still be found. The rock in the verse is the bare one, the place for nets, the one that is not built again. I keep the two words apart so the omen can be seen: the judgment does not use her name for what it makes her.
