Methodshem שֵׁם
Not a verse. A protocol for roots.
| Form | Vowel | Sense | Do not mix |
|---|---|---|---|
| שֵׁם šēm | /ʃem/ | name, fame, memorial | — |
| שָׁם šām | /ʃam/ | “there” | different sense |
| שֵׁם Šēm | proper | son of Noah | the noun, not the genealogy |
| שׁוּם šūm | garlic; or Aramaic “because of” | another root, ṯūm | |
| שָׂם śām | “to put” (ś-y-m) | Strong draws it near; BDB says root unknown |
1. Split homographs first
If šēm, šām, garlic, and “to put” are mixed, the analysis dies.
2. Semitic comparative
Proto-Semitic *šim- / *sim- “name,” Afroasiatic *sim-. Akkadian šumu is name and offspring. Aramaic šəmā / šum, Arabic ism, Ethiopic səm, Phoenician šm, Sabaic sm. That is why shem covers renown and a memorial in sons, without a theological jump.
3. Senses, not one gloss
BDB / Strong H8034 (BDB: root unknown): (1) designation of a river, city, or person (2) reputation, ʿāśâ lô šēm (3) “the Name” as designation (4) memorial, yād wāšēm. Gesenius tests Arabic wasm “to mark.” A hypothesis, not a proof.
4. Beside nōmen and ónoma
Hebrew shem is what one is called and what is remembered. Greek ónoma is the label and the authority to call. Latin nōmen is the gens-name and fame. Labor Nominis works that trio. It does not prove Vila-real is Shem.
5. Clocks, split
Text clock: shem in Genesis and the lexica is name and renown. Charter clock, 1274 / Villarreal: Iberian toponymy, adjacent, not derived. SAI / Roboto: a modern house. Not a cognate of *šim-.
Not method: Strong’s “perhaps from śûm / shamayim” (1890, no consensus). “Shem = Super Advanced / SAI” is a house game, not an etymology. Preaching HaShem does not settle the surname.
